Update Your Resume, Update Your Look

by Easter on September 20, 2010

One of the first rules of job hunting is update your resume. You have probably already done that. What about you, though? When was the last time you decided to update your look? This is very important, if you are a middle-aged job seeker or someone who has been in the job market for more than 10 years. It is even important for the college grad. The student look and style, is not the same as the job seeker look and style.

Employers are looking for interview candidates who are current with technology and with up to date in their field. If you are wearing eyeglass frames that are 10 or 20 years out of style, with a hairstyle equally as dated, what does that say about you? It says that you are not up to date, out of touch with the times, and probably not willing to make changes. Remember the rule of first impressions.

It may not be a fair assessment, if you look dated it screams to the interviewer, “My knowledge is from 10-20 years ago, I resist learning new things, and don’t want to change.” You can expect a short interview and to be placed in the “no” list of job candidates.

The problem can be that you don’t realize you look out of style. If you have not changed your eyeglasses in the past 5 years, you need to update. You need to have an eye exam at least every 2 years for the health of your eyes. Did you know that eye doctors can diagnose more than just more than just eye problems? They can also see if you have diabetes and other diseases. That should convince you to go get your eye exam and update your frames. Take a look at the Pearle Vision website. They will take your photo of you in different frames and you can have friends vote on which they like. You can go to the Lenscrafters site, to find out what shape your face is, and then choose frames that will look best on you.

Now your hairstyle. If you have the same hairstyle you had 10 years ago, you need help right away. Both men and women can to go to a hairstylist and get an updated look. It may be a subtle change, like the way you part your hair. For women, adding bangs can make a big difference in your appearance. Go to a salon and look through their magazines and books on hair styles. Ask for suggestions on updating your look, and then be brave and get that new haircut and style.

It’s not just smart to update your resume, it’s smart to update your look. A new improved look will add to your confidence, put a spring in your step, help you stay motivated to keep job hunting, and give a great first impression to your interviewers! Send me your before and after photos. You never know, yours could be posted here!

I am assuming that your phone interviews are in English. If you are not getting beyond the phone interview, then I do believe that it is first a communication problem for you.
Is there an English speaking class that you can take that will help you in your field? Are you fully understanding the questions asked of you during your phone interviews? If you are unsure of questions, then that of course would be a big obstacle in the interview.
Good luck to you!
